Healthy Resources

Taking care of your health is easier than you think. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming provides these web links for information on some simple steps you can take to live well at home and work well on the job.

Get Active

Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. Try a new sport. Wear an activity tracker and increase the number of steps you fit into a day. Do some laps around the park or the shopping mall. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Get outside and play with your kids. The list goes on.

The following links can help you find information for physical activity:

Eat Healthy

Good nutrition is a one of the best ways to improve your health. It’s also one of the tastiest. Keep a food journal to monitor your eating habits. Try serving a new healthy food at dinner once or twice a week. Make sure your plate has plenty of color: red, green, yellow, etc. Cut down on expensive restaurant meals and high-calorie fast food by planning your meals a week at a time.

These websites are all great resources for eating healthy, and they contain tools for weight management–whether the goal is weight loss, weight maintenance or weight gain.

Maintain Life Balance

When experiencing personal or professional troubles, many people rely on friends and family. Although they may be helpful, sometimes it just isn’t enough to get your life back on track. An understanding, objective professional ear can be a great first step to improving your mental health.

Visit some of these websites to learn more about protecting your mental health and managing stress:

Managing Disease and Health Conditions

If you have a disease or health problem, there are things you can try to minimize its impact and maintain your quality of life. Ask your doctor about how exercise, diet or new treatment options can help you feel better. Another important step in managing your condition is to educate yourself. Below are some resources that can help you manage an existing disease or chronic health condition.

Breaking the Tobacco Habit

One of the hardest parts of quitting tobacco is fighting the cravings. Knowing your triggers, and doing something about them, can help you fight the urge to smoke. Avoid places where smoking is allowed, and spend more time with people who don’t smoke. Keep sugar-free gum, veggies, fruit and other portable, healthy snacks around. Stay away from alcohol. Keep your hands busy. And try to wait for cravings to subside.

Give Your Baby the Best Possible Start

The key to a great pregnancy is great prenatal care. According to March of Dimes, women who seek regular health care during pregnancy are less likely to deliver prematurely and are less likely to have other serious problems related to pregnancy. There are other ways to give your baby a great beginning: eat healthy, drink plenty of fluids, and exercise sensibly.

Stay on Track

Everyone knows that it takes good decisions to maintain health, but it also takes support. A few simple tools can help you stay focused and track your progress to keep you motivated. Try writing down your daily meals and snacks in a notebook. Hang a calendar in your home or office and track your exercise routine. And don’t forget to reward yourself for sticking to your plan.

Using a Retail Pharmacy

Finding a Participating Retail Pharmacy

Our pharmacy network consists of more than 55,000 pharmacies in Wyoming and across the country. Choosing a pharmacy in our network will provide you with convenient pharmacy services and access to more affordable medications.

When you use a pharmacy that is not in our network, you pay the full cost of your prescription up front. You will also have to submit a claim to get reimbursed. Reimbursement for prescriptions filled at non-network pharmacies is not guaranteed.

How to Fill a Prescription at a Retail Pharmacy

Getting your medications at any of the 55,000+ pharmacies in our pharmacy network is easy. Simply present your prescription and BCBSWY ID card to the pharmacist. Your benefits are applied automatically so you know right away what out-of-pocket costs may be your responsibility.

If you go to a pharmacy that is not in our network, you pay the full cost of your prescription up front. Then you can file a claim with BCBSWY for reimbursement. You may be responsible for amounts exceeding allowable charges. Check your benefit booklet for more information.

Preferred Drug List (Formulary)

A preferred drug list or formulary is a list of prescription drugs and supplies that have been selected to give you the best results while saving you the most money. You can buy a drug that is not on the list, but you may pay more. Ask your doctor to prescribe medications from your formulary when possible.

Who decides which drugs go on the list?

The Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) committee makes decisions about the drug list. This committee is made up of doctors and pharmacists. These drugs meet clinical standards for safety, effectiveness, uniqueness and cost.

Drug Cost Estimator

It may be possible to reduce your overall prescription drug costs. Consider these suggestions:

  • Ask about generic drugs. They can deliver better value than brand name drugs, working in the same way and costing less. Generic equivalents are considered by the FDA to be comparable to brand name drugs in:
    • Dosage form
    • Performance
    • Quality
    • Safety
    • Strength
    • Usage
  • Use mail-service. Fill your prescription through your mail-service pharmacy.
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
    • Ask your doctor to prescribe drugs on the formulary when possible.
    • Review all medications you are currently taking with your doctor; you may not need them all.
    • Talk to your doctor about a lower dose.
    • Ask if you may be taking similar medications without knowing it.
    • Ask about switching to over-the-counter alternatives.
