General Purpose

To perform in-house actuarial functions involving ratings, special reports, and most types of statistical analyses.  Analyst creates basic production programs and maintains existing ones.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Completes basic Actuarial projects with limited or no supervision after an initial period of training.
  • Participates in mid and higher level Actuarial projects with supervision.
  • Provides peer review and QC of other Analysts work as directed.
  • After a period of introduction, demonstrates a basic understanding of:
    • Actuarial theory, including rating, reserving, and financial modeling
    • Insurance concepts and principles
    • Computer file organization, layout, and design principles
    • Actuary department processes, protocol, and workflow
    • Data Warehouse layout and use
    • BOLTS screen use and maintenance
    • Available data sources, their structure, accessibility, and limitations
    • The regulatory environment
    • The specific financial and risk issues relating to all segments of BCBSWY business
  • Maintains all files in such a way that:
    • source data is included, or referenced if stored elsewhere,
    • all worksheets and calculations can be interpreted,
    • final product is included,
    • a written summary of noteworthy circumstances particular to the current file is included,
    • file is accurately labeled and easily located in work area.
  • Provides support and acts as a reference for other departments.
  • Communicates problems and progress with projects to Supervisor/Director of Actuary on a regular basis.
  • Makes verbal or written reports at actuary meetings to acquaint department personnel with status of functions and shows interest in current department activities.
  • Documents all data reporting errors or data service problems and reports these to Supervisor/Director of Actuary.
  • Maintains a notebook divided into major functions. Lists all sources and specific procedures under each major function in such a way that another person in the department could perform the necessary procedures in an emergency.  Keeps computer files well documented with several instructions and notes as part of the file.
  • Makes ongoing improvements to all projects/systems. Strives to make routine projects as efficient as possible.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the hardware and software used by the department sufficient to perform required duties.

  • Continuously ensures accuracy in the data used in projects

Job Qualifications

Knowledge, Skill & Ability
  • Excellent mathematical background with a strong knowledge of statistical principles and insurance concepts.
  • Strong knowledge of computer hardware and software including MS Office, and Windows.
  • Ability to think and analyze for extended periods of time with a high degree of accuracy on details.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through with all assigned work.
Education, Licensure, or Formal Training
  • College degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or Computer Science is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of personal computers and programming is required.
Experience

No prior experience required.

Equipment & Environment

Material & Equipment Directly Used

Personal computer, 10-key calculator, photocopier, fax machine, telephone.

Working Environment / Physical Activities

Office cubicle containing a personal computer, telephone and business calculator.  Physical activities may include delivery of reports to various departments within the building and retrieval of BOLTS reports (weighing up to 10 pounds) from the computer output area.
